Chinese Placement Test

This year's Chinese Placement Test will be administered on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 and on Thursday, March 16, 2017.

These are the ONLY dates available to take this test.  Please plan accordingly.


All incoming 9th graders and current 10th graders MUST complete the RESIDENCY VERIFICATION PROCESS to be allowed into the Placement test.

Frequently Asked Questions


Who does NOT sign up for this test?

  • Students who are ENROLLED IN CLIP in CUSD. These students will take the placement test at their junior high school. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS TEST!
  • Students who are planning to request Chinese Level 1 if no Chinese is spoken in the home or any level of Spanish, French or Japanese.
  • Students who TOOK THIS TEST LAST YEAR. We keep previous scores on file. Students do NOT need to take the placement test again. See a school counselor have them look up your previous placement test results. 
  • Students who are curious and want to see what their score would be.
  • Only students who request a Chinese class on their course request form will be allowed to take this test. This test is offered annually; therefore, you will be able to take it in the future when it is offered during course selection.  


What happens after I submit my registration for the Chinese Placement test?

Registered students will receive an email and ADMISSION ticket on or before Friday, March 10, 2017. The email will contain the following information:





How is the placement test designed?

There are two sections to the placement test. One part is a written exam and the other part is taken using a computer. Students can choose between simplified or traditional Chinese. For students who would like more information about the test, visit The ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) website. https://aappl.actfl.org/


What happens after the placement test?

  • Results will be emailed out to students and parents. It can take up to 6 weeks before the results are received by the school (as late as late April) before results are distributed to parents and students. The email will contain the following information:
    • Chinese Placement Test Score

    • Chinese Course Level

IMPORTANT: 9th-graders are rarely placed into AP Chinese as space is limited. Incoming 9th-grade students who score at level 5 (Chinese AP) may need to wait until after their 9th-grade year to enroll into the AP Chinese class. Scores are kept on file, so students DO NOT need to take the placement test again.


What if I missed the Placement Test, can I enroll in Chinese for the 2017-18 school year?

Students who do not have a Chinese Placement Test score will be enrolled in a Chinese class on a space available basis, and they must be assessed by our current Chinese teacher. Every effort should be made to take the placement test if the student wants to be enrolled in a Chinese class.


Can students take more than one language class at the same time?

In students' first six course choices, they cannot choose two languages; however, if a student wants a second language as their seventh class choice, knowing that a seventh class is never guaranteed, a student may do so.


What is the college language requirement?

The college language requirement may vary depending on the college. Information from the UC website regarding the language requirement for admission: (http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/requirements/a-g-requirements/index.html#language)


E) Language other than English


UC-approved high school courses

Two years, or equivalent to the 2nd level of high school instruction, of the same language other than English, are required. (Three years/3rd level of high school instruction recommended). Courses should emphasize speaking and understanding, and include instruction in grammar, vocabulary, reading, composition, and culture. American Sign Language and classical languages, such as Latin and Greek, are acceptable. Courses taken in the seventh and eighth grades may be used to fulfill part or all of this requirement if the high school accepts them as equivalent to its courses.


SAT Subject Examination

The following scores satisfy the entire requirement:

  • Chinese With Listening: 520

  • French/French With Listening: 540

  • German/German With Listening: 510

  • Modern Hebrew: 470

  • Italian: 520

  • Japanese With Listening: 510

  • Korean With Listening: 500

  • Latin: 530

  • Spanish/Spanish With Listening: 520

AP or IB Examination

Score of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP Exam in Chinese Language and Culture, French Language and Culture, German Language and Culture, Italian Language and Culture, Japanese Language and Culture, Spanish Language, Spanish Literature or Latin;
a score of 5, 6 or 7 on an IB Language A2 HL exam


College courses

A grade of C or better in any transferable course(s) (excluding conversation) held by the College to be equivalent to two years of high school language. Many colleges list the prerequisites for their second course in language as "Language 1 at this college or two years of high school language." In this case, Language 1 clears both years of the requirement.
